Adrenal Care

The adrenal glands are small, triangular-shaped glands located on the top of both kidneys. These glands produce a variety of hormones that help to regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, stress (fight or flight) responses and other essential functions.

Hormones

Cortisol & DHEA

Although all the hormones produced by the adrenal glands are important, two key hormones are cortisol and DHEA (dehydropiandrosterone). Cortisol helps control the body’s use of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Cortisol also controls the sleep–wake cycle and is released during times of stress. DHEA is a precursor hormone that is converted into estrogens in women’s ovaries and into testosterone in men’s testes.

Common Problems

Adrenal gland problems vary in their severity. Less severe symptoms may include tiredness, fatigue, dizziness, muscle and joint pain, muscle weakness, moodiness and irritability, decreased appetite, weight loss and, in women, irregular menstrual cycles. More severe symptoms, for which you should seek immediate medical attention, may include fainting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

How can Ellithia help?

You may be able to improve adrenal function by balancing your intake of protein, healthy fats, and high-quality, nutrient-dense carbohydrates. Increasing your vegetable intake will help you get the necessary vitamins and minerals. The focus should be on vegetables high in vitamin C, B vitamins, and magnesium.

If a change in diet does not improve adrenal function, or for those diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency (commonly known as adrenal fatigue), bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) may help to reduce, or even eliminate, your symptoms. Ellithia Healthcare can help you with this.
